The NMRA contests committee invites all convention attendees to bring items to enter into any contest for which they qualify!
Contests & Displays
Judged Model Contest – Scratch Built & Kit Built
There are nine categories for each division. These are steam locomotive, diesel and other locomotive, passenger car, freight car, non-revenue car, caboose, traction, structure, and display. Any scale is permitted to enter. Entries in the Kit Built division must be made from commercially available kits and may not be altered more than 50%. Any model may be entered in the Scratch Built division. Forms #901* and #902* are required.
Judged Module Contest –
Modules that are displayed at the National Train Show are eligible to be entered in this contest. There are two categories. The individual category must have the module built by only one individual. The group category allows for modules built by more than one person. Form #901* and #903* are required.
Judged Photography Contest –
Entries can be made in several categories. These include Model Black & White Print, Prototype Black & White Print, Model Color Print, Prototype Color Print, Model Slide and Prototype Slide.
Form #901* is required.
Judged RailroadPass Contest –
Enter your railroad pass into this contest. Form #901* is required.
People’s Choice Awards –
Selection of winners is by popular vote or registered attendees. Models, photos and crafts are included in this event. Models may be entered in one of six categories. All scales are accommodated in each category. The categories are locomotive, rolling stock, caboose, structure, display and best train.
All models are also eligible for the photo match contest which selects the model that most closely resembles a supplied photograph.
Photo categories include print and slide. Arts & Crafts entries comprise general kit built, railroadiana kit built, general pattern, railroadiana pattern, general original, railroadiana original, needlework kit built, needlework pattern and needlework original.
Form #901* is required. Models entered in the Judged Contests are automatically entered into this contest.
Model Showcase – Meet the modeler, photographer or crafter.
There is no judging in this category. Enter and display your items and be present in the contest room to answer questions, discuss techniques and to generally show off your skills. Form #901* is required.

- Judging - Wednesday, 8:00a to 4:00p
- Model Contest Score Review – Thursday, 9:00a to 11:00a
- Awards Ceremony - Thursday, 2:00p, viewing 8:00a - 4:00p
- Award ceremony will take place in Contest room. Refreshments graciously provided by the NMRA Education Department.
- Award Photo Shoot - Thursday, 4:00p [CLOSED SESSION]
- Entry Pickup – Friday, 8:00a to 12:00p
